Depending on its configuration the system can digitally record (loop recording) up to 200 TV and radio stations at the same time with different levels of quality and over periods of time ranging from days, months or years. During recording, metadata such as EPG, subtitles, as-run-logs can be added automatically and time-synchronised. Individual texts can be inserted via bookmarks during or after recording. The metadata themselves are visualised by small preview images (thumbnails) in the XBL-Player. Through the combination of metadata and recordings, broadcasts can be targeted, searched and immediately played back by typing in keywords.

The XBL Logger employs the modern WM9/VC-1 codec and thus achieves recordings with small storage requirements but with excellent video and audio quality.

Moreover, the CVOD technology patented by artec technologies enables network-based, time-shifted playback. The XBL Player combines user interface live display, search, playback, metadata as well as clip editing on one user interface. Operation of the player as well as administration is based on standard web browsers and need neither plug-ins nor ActiveX. With the Multiplayer, up to nine channels can be displayed or played back in the multiscreen mode simultaneously.

The XBL-Broadcast Logger Professional consists of one XBL Masterunit and multiple XBL Subunits. The XBL Masterunit administers and controls the overall system with all its connected XBL Subunits and includes user and content management, database and web server.
