14 Jan Minimum OS Support Level
Wed, 14 Jan 2009 14:00:15 +1100. Posted in Support
Our minimum Operating System support level is now officially Windows XP (Win32 Version 5.1 or higher).

Current software development will no longer be supported on Windows 95, 98, NT, or 2000 platforms.

The decision to move up our minimum OS support level opens up more opportunity to exploit newer OS features only found in the XP and Vista/2008 platforms.

We encourage users to consider upgrading to Windows 2003 or 2008 Server if still operating on Win2K Server.

13 Jan Windows 7
Tue, 13 Jan 2009 09:55:30 +1100. Posted in Comment
With the public release of Windows 7 BETA this week we've been eager to get to work on the platform and to see what it offers developers.

Although we have been producing fully Vista compliant applications for over a year, we have seen a very low adoption rate for the Vista OS. One interesting fact to emerge from the Vista/Window 7 camp at MS is that OS development has reverted back to a Native code-base. You may know that the Vista/Longhorn strategy was to develop an OS based on .NET and essentially provide a framework rather than a Operating System in the traditional sense.

Since the poor performance of Vista became a public talking point both from a sales/adoption and a software stand-point, the reliance on .NET as a framework for an OS has become a hot issue. Microsoft has obviously seen the error in that strategy and returned to its roots in native code for OS with Windows 7.

From a development stand-point we saw little benefit in Windows Vista other than a nice UI (Aero). Yes, there are some fundamental changes required to meet the user security requirements post-XP (Vista/2008) and we continue to support these as standard. However, for users in the broadcast sector and especially in the realm of real-time automation, we have not promoted Vista as a solid platform for our software (or any of our partner's systems either).

So, on to Windows 7...

We are happy to report that all existing software is supported on Windows 7 (beta) and performs well. More testing is obviously required before we position it as a viable upgrade from XP, however with the return to native code at the OS level we are confident that Win7 will be a strong future OS candidate.

04 Nov Delphi - Strong contender for Language of the Year
Tue, 4 Nov 2008 12:14:47 GMT. Posted in Comment

Once again this month we see Delphi maintaining its strong rise in the TIOBE Programming Community Index, coming in at 8th position and posing a real threat to C#.

The TIOBE Index tracks the popularity of programming languages and thanks to the global release of Delphi 2009, the language looks set to regain the dominance it once held in 2005.

The most interesting statistic in tracking programming languages is the lack of traction .NET is maintaining. Microsoft's C# has experienced a sharp decline this year along with VB. Leaving Java, C, C++ and PHP holding ground in the top slots.

The resurgence of native code is very much apparent for Windows and the wide adoption of Delphi 2009 is a very strong indicator that native code in a RAD IDE is a dominant factor is platform choice.

It will be an interesting to watch the adoption of Delphi's native 64bit compiler when it becomes available and how it stands up against .NET managed code.

One noteworthy fact to come out of Microsoft PDC 2008 and the release of Window 7 to the community was that Delphi 2009 is the only dev platform ready for the new alpha Windows version, as was the case when Windows Vista was released.

02 Oct Native Code Development - Thriving
Thu, 2 Oct 2008 10:13:50 GMT. Posted in Comment
"Native code remains the core foundation for desktop, client/server, and workstation application development. ISVs and Micro ISVs rely on native code to deliver high-performance packaged software, and the ubiquity of multicore architectures enables programmers with abilities in native languages like C++ and Delphi to drive application development in high-growth industries like healthcare, financial markets, and services and telecommunications. And even when we peel back every dynamic language, managed virtual machine, RIA runtime, or Web 2.0 framework, we ultimately find a native code foundation built with native C++ or Delphi compilers. Native code is the wizard behind the curtain. It will always be in fashion." - Michael Swindell (Embarcadero Technologies).

22 Sep Assumption is the mother of all screw-ups
21 Sep 2008 23:06:07 GMT GMT. Posted in Comment
"Assumption is the mother of all screw-ups. Never, ever assume anything when it comes to circumstances in which defects are reported. Always check the obvious first, before looking for more esoteric causes.

When you hear "But I just assumed...", you know something has gone wrong."

Lots of great answers to the question -

16 Sep Sexy User Interfaces
15 Sep 2008 23:38:32 GMT GMT. Posted in Comment
There is growing debate on the importance of the User Interface in Software Development within the Broadcast Engineering space. Depending on which side of the fence you're on, your opinion will differ quite dramatically. Discuss the importance of a sexy UI with someone in sales and you’ll soon discover how many purchasing decisions are made on this metric alone – Many will judge the quality of the software based on how good it looks.

People often confuse the exterior with the interior, inferring that if it looks nice it must have everything they need. The usability can sometimes be linked to the way things look (whether sexy or not) but the functionality almost never can. Especially when the person buying the software is not the person using the software, it creates an even bigger disconnect between sexy interface and intuitive design. Sometimes the tradeoff between looking good and being good is application performance, accessibility and solid functionality.

Ask any analyst or the person writing the design spec and the sexiness of the UI is something that generally gets in the way of delivery.

Our approach is somewhere in the middle with the focus of software design squarely focused on the User Experience. Some of the best software on the planet suffers from a lack of focus on the end-user. Many will speculate that 95% of MS Word users only interact with 5% of the software’s functionality. The barrier to maximizing the benefits of the software is in the UI design and quite often presents a huge challenge in the design process.

The linked article on www.humancapitalist.com, presents some colourful discussion on this subject.

10 Sep MediaPilot gets new Reporting Engine and Tag Cloud
10 Sep 2008 01:17:36 GMT GMT. Posted in Software
In our never-ending quest to provide MAM with smarter search options we've added a Tag Cloud to MediaPilot's Advanced Search feature.

A Tag Cloud is a visual depiction of media tags. Tags are usually single words and are typically listed alphabetically, and the importance of a tag is shown with font size or color. Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. The tags are hyperlinked to a collection of media that are associated with a tag.

We've also updated our Visual Reporting Engine with new 3-D charts and graphs displaying Archive content and activity metrics.
